What vaccinations does my dog need for daycare?
Before your dog’s first day at Lucky’s, we need proof of three vaccinations. Here is what they are, why each one matters in a group setting, and what to do if you would rather not re-vaccinate.
The three we require
Bordetella. This is the one people know as “kennel cough,” and it is the most obviously daycare-relevant of the three. Bordetella spreads through the air and through shared surfaces — water bowls, toys, the floor — which is exactly what a group of dogs shares all day.
Parvo/distemper. Usually given as a combination shot. Parvovirus is durable in the environment and serious, especially in younger dogs. Distemper spreads dog to dog.
Rabies. Required by law for dogs in British Columbia, so most dogs already have it. We need to see the record on file regardless.
Titer tests are accepted
If you would rather not re-vaccinate — an older dog, a dog who has reacted badly before, or simply a preference you have discussed with your vet — we accept titer tests.
A titer test is a blood test that measures the antibodies already in your dog’s system for a given disease. If the level is high enough, it demonstrates existing immunity without another shot. Ask your vet; they will know what you mean.
This is a conversation to have with your veterinarian, not with us. What we need is a record showing your dog is protected, whichever route gets you there.
How to send them to us
Records go into your profile in our client portal. Create the profile, upload the documents, and we will check them before your assessment is booked. A photo of the paperwork from your vet is fine — it does not need to be a formal certificate as long as it is legible and dated.
If the records are sitting in your vet’s system rather than in your filing cabinet, most clinics will email them to you on request.
Then the assessment
Vaccinations are the paperwork half of getting started. The other half is the free assessment, where your dog meets a couple of our staff and a couple of our regular dogs so we can see how they do and which playgroup suits them.
Once both are done, you can book days through the portal.
Vaccination requirements are ours, as a facility. For medical advice about what is right for your individual dog — including whether a titer test is appropriate — talk to your veterinarian.
